FastFinder - A Desktop Alternative
FastFinder is intended as an alternative to the Destop.
You will probably find FastFinder useful if you
o Dislike scroll bars
o Dislike "double clicking"
o Hate to wait
o Despise the desktop's handling of subdirectories
o Want a useful "Install Application"
Fastfinder is not a replacement for the desktop, it is a
supplement. Fastfinder cannot delete, rename or copy files,
nor can it format disks. The desktop is at it's best doing
these things, and to make FastFinder do them as well would
make FastFinder not quite so easy to use, and not nearly as
fast.
When you execute FastFinder, you see a credit screen for
two seconds. The credit screen tells you what revision you are
using and how much free ram you have. The next screen is the main
screen. At the top is a line containing the current directory.
Below that is a dividing line. If the display is set to
"executables only", the words "only pgm" will be printed at the
far right of the dividing line.
To exit the FastFinder, press the ESC key.
The directory listing takes up the greater portion of the
screen. The files are alphabetically sorted by filename. The
list starts in the upper left corner and goes doen the left side.
If there are more files than will fit in one column, the files run
on into the next column. If the number of files override the
entire screen, a mouse click on the rightmost pixel of the screen
will scroll the display. A click on the leftmost pixel will
scroll the other way.
The filenames are displayed differenly depending on their
file type. SUBDIRECTORIES are displayed using bold text. DATA
FILES are displayed in normal text. EXECUTABLE files are
displayed in italics.
An executable file is one which has one of the following
extenders: .PRG, .TOS or .TTP. Using the configuration section of
the program, you may change or add to these (perhaps adding .EXE,
.BIN or .COM) if you wish.
When you click in a subdirectory, FastFinder enters that
sibderectory and displayes all the files in it. To return to the
previous directory, click the RIGHT MOUSE BUTTON. FastFinder
supports 8 levels of nested directories.
When you click on an executable file, FastFinder will execute
it. If the file extender is .TTP, FastFinder will prompt you for
a command line, which you must type by hand. If the current
screen resolution is low, executing a .TOS or a .TTP program will
cause the screen resolution to change to medium.
When you click on a data file (anything that is NOT a
directory and NOT an executable) the file is printed on the
screen, EXCEPT if the file's extender belongs to an executable.
Example: .DOC files belong to the executable STW1_50.PRG.
Clicking on any .DOC file will cause STW1_50.PRG to be executed.
The name of the data file will be passed to the executable.
If the space bar is pressed, the EXECUTABLES ONLY flag is
turned on/off. The "only pgm" indicator in the upper right cornet
of the screen comes on if the flag is set. With the executables
only set on, data files are not displayed.
When you press RETURN or ENTER, quick mode is turned off or
on. Quick mode displays in standard format al the names you
entered in the install application part of the program.
On a color monitor, the three different file types have three
different colors. Using the configuration portion of the program,
you may change the colors of the text and background, and the size
of the text. To acess the configuration menus, move the mouse to
the top line of the screen and click the mouse.
The alert box offers two options, DISPLAY and OPTIONS. If
you select NOTHING, you are asked if you want to save the current
configuration. If you choose to save the configuration, a file
names FASTFIND.INF is saved on the directory FastFinder was
originally started from.
The DISPLAY option gets another alert. You may change the
text Colors or the text Sizes. Colors puts up a four-selection
RGB editor. Press a key to exit this section. Text puts up a
sizes alert box. The three availible text sizes are the standard
sizes of ST text, 6x6, 8x8 and 8x16.
Options puts up an alert: Extender or Application. Choosing
Extender lets you change the string containing the extenders that
delineate valid executable files. Be sure that each extender is
separated with a dot.
There are 100 possible applications you may install. When
you select Application, you get a screen displaying one of 100
possible installations. Press the up or down arrows to select
which to edit. Press return to edit, or ESC to exit to the
configuration screen.
You must supply the FULL PATHNAME of the application.
Example: d:\apps\textedit\stwriter\stw1_50.prg. You must then
supply the list of extenders that belong to that application.
Example: .doc.txt. After typing the extenders, you may then
supply a name for the quick finder part of the program. If there
is no name specified, the application will not appear in the quick
screen.
If you click on a data file and it loads an installed
application, THE CURRENT DIRECTORY IS SET TO THE DATA FILE. This
may cause problems with programs that load resource files.
If you use the quick function to run an application, THE
CURRENT DIRECTORY IS SET TO THE APPLICATION.
I hate writing documentation. this is the end.
